Independent Research

Our data comes from public sources and industry surveys โ€” not from companies looking to sell you something.

๐Ÿ“Š

Real Numbers

We build estimates from actual rate data and published sources, updated regularly as conditions change.

Sourced & Transparent

Every state figure links to its official agency, and we're upfront about how the site is funded. See how we research this.

Our Mission

Workers' compensation is one of the most consequential โ€” and most confusing โ€” systems most people will ever interact with. Whether you're an injured worker trying to understand what your claim is worth, a small business owner trying to figure out what coverage should cost, or someone who's just received a settlement offer that doesn't feel right, the information you need to make a good decision is rarely easy to find in one place.

MyWorkersCompCalc.com was built to fix that. We compile state-by-state benefit data, settlement formula breakdowns, and plain-language explanations of a system that was designed by lawyers and administered by insurance companies โ€” not by the workers and employers who depend on it. Our goal is to give you a factual starting point before you hire an attorney or sign anything.

How We Research

Every figure on this site starts with an official source. State weekly maximum benefit rates come from each state's workers' compensation board or department of labor โ€” we link directly to the source on every state page so you can verify the number yourself. Impairment rating schedules, waiting period rules, and filing deadlines are pulled from state statutes and updated annually, or when a state legislature changes the rules.

For settlement estimates and national average ranges, we draw on published data from the Workers' Compensation Research Institute (WCRI), the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), and peer-reviewed studies in occupational health and labor economics. Where figures differ across sources, we present the range rather than pick a number and call it authoritative.

When a figure can't be confirmed from an official or peer-reviewed source, we say so explicitly and show the formula so you can apply current numbers yourself. We don't guess, and we don't present estimated data as definitive fact. Full methodology is on our Editorial Policy page.

What We Are โ€” and Aren't

We are an independent consumer research publisher. We are not a law firm. Nothing on this site is legal advice, and nothing here creates an attorney-client relationship. Workers' compensation law is highly state-specific, and the right answer for your situation depends on facts that no calculator can fully account for.

We don't sell insurance. We don't represent insurers, employers, or carriers. The site is free to use and supported by advertising. We may also connect people who request it with licensed workers' comp attorneys โ€” we are sometimes compensated for that referral at no cost to you, and you are never obligated to hire anyone. Our research and data are produced independently of those commercial relationships and are not influenced by them.

If you have a serious injury, a disputed claim, or a settlement offer in hand, please consult a licensed workers' compensation attorney. Most take cases on contingency โ€” meaning no upfront cost โ€” and the data consistently shows that represented workers receive substantially better outcomes.

Who Runs This

Brad Burton is the founder and editor of MyWorkersCompCalc.com. Brad has spent over a decade building consumer-facing research tools across insurance, legal, and financial categories โ€” translating complex regulatory systems into plain-language resources that help people make informed decisions before consulting a professional.

His work spans workers' compensation, homeowners insurance, life insurance, mortgage calculations, and personal injury research โ€” all areas where the average person faces a significant information gap when dealing with large institutions. The calculators and guides on this site reflect hundreds of hours of research into state statutes, agency publications, and academic literature.

The site is maintained by a small editorial team. Content is reviewed for accuracy on a regular basis and updated whenever state laws, benefit maximums, or published research changes. We are not attorneys, and we say so plainly โ€” our job is to make official information easier to find and understand, and to point you toward the right professionals when you need one.
